An awesome interview…part one

by Megan on September 27, 2012

I am so excited to share with you my amazing interview with Kate Courageous!

We had one inspiring talk. Kate shared some seriously valuable insight on the path of the creative indiepreneur, her experience growing her business, and tips for injecting courage into our daily lives as we grow our businesses. All stuff you NEED to hear.

What’s really important to me is that we really start a dialogue on a lot of these questions…they’re really fundamental to the success of any indiepreneur.  The first question I asked Kate during our interview was:

One of the big things I stress with clients is that Year 1+ in business is a time when you should (honestly) be looking to screw up more than you look to be perfect. The learned lessons are invaluable. You referred to your 2010 experience as treating your business as a “learning laboratory.” The courage to me comes in the application of those lessons learned–can you you talk about how you did that?

Take a listen to our conversation on it:

So…when you got started, what different paths did you take?  Did you experiment with different products, different methods of delivery, or different ways of communicating? Did you make decisions based on what “felt right” or what you thought you were supposed to do? What sort of expectations did you have for yourself?

I can say, for me, I had a crazy perfectionist streak.  I wanted everything to be exactly right (what is that, anyway?), often to the end that I wouldn’t deliver, or I’d spin my wheels forever, waiting for the moment when everything came together and it was completely flawless. Was I being true to myself and my abilities?  No way. I was hiding behind “process” and “perfection.” I wasn’t allowing myself to fully show up.  When started getting clear on what I really, truly wanted, that perfectionist bent really fell to the wayside.  Not that I don’t care about delivering high-quality anymore, but the alignment of desire + action is a funny thing:  it creates your highest quality.  You no longer have to strive for it.

Many, many thanks to Kate Courageous for sharing her wisdom with us…stay tuned Friday and Monday for more from our interview.
