I’ve been waxing poetic on this topic in my own biz for quite some time now. Damn, it’s hard.
I’m not talking about writing/coaching, or web designing, or creating art, or the day-to-day stuff like admin and operations.
I’m talking about what you *really* do.
This isn’t about skill sets, or what it says on your resume, or the tasks on your never-ending to-do list.
This is about what you (and only you) can uniquely provide the world.
See, there’s really no such thing as: “I’m just a _______.” That’s small thinking, undervaluing your abilities, and frankly, bullshit. That small statement speaks volumes about our self-worth, and it’s not pretty. We’re really undermining our authenticity–and let’s be honest: who wants to work with anyone who says “I’m just a _____.”? I want to work with people who KNOW how freakin’ amazing they are and own it–because I want that energy to come through in my business, too. Law of attraction, friends.
So what I’m getting to is this: there’s always something underneath–a rich vein of purpose that suffuses every word you write, every site you design, and every piece you make with a richness that only you can create. Tell us what it is. Own it as yours. Stake that ground and fly your proverbial freak flag high. (I know…metaphoric overload. moving on.)
Now, getting to this epiphany is the hard part. As creative thinkers, we always think expansively ( I do this. And this. And this. And this.), so when the time comes to really boil it down we start having a panic attack. (I can’t possibly corral everything I do in one simple statement. It’s impossible. I don’t want to be limited! I don’t want people to think I’m just…”) <—–Ahhhh…see what I just did there?
Instead of boiling it down, and taking on boundaries, I’m suggesting you find the thread. There’s a little golden thread woven into all the work you do, both within your business and without. You may see glimmers of it in some places, and it may shine brightly in others. The point is: it’s always there. All you have to do is uncover it.
Want to know mine?
I’m not just a writer and a business coach.
What do I *really* do?
I create order out of chaos.
It took me a ridiculous amount of time to figure this out & own it. I’ve quietly had it simmering for a long time, but could never really figure out how to verbalize and act on it, especially within my business model. So my challenge to you: find your golden thread. Let us all know what it is in the comments.
